1. Favourite knob/fader/switch on a piece of gear and why?

I love the Cutoff knob on my prophet Rev 2. Thanks to it, I can modulate the sound in a thousand ways.
Aesthetically the monopole is not beautiful, but I have a lot of fun to use it!

2. Do you have an ‘almost’ perfect bit of kit? What would you change?

My kit is satisfactory, but I like to change musical instrumentation often. I would love to try as many musical instruments as possible! Collaborating with different brands I have the good fortune to try many different instruments, which I have used a lot, for many of my musical projects.

3. What setup do you bring on holiday/tour/commute etc.?

My travel kit consists of Keystep pro + Ableton + Zoom H6.
When I’m on tour or on vacation I avoid carrying too many tools! I like to be as comfortable as possible!

4. What software do you wish was hardware and vice versa?

I always wanted a version of Max by Cycling ’74 in a hardware format, that would be pretty cool. I wouldn’t know what to turn into software, I prefer hardware!

5. Is there anything you regret selling… or regret buying?

Hmmm, I have no regrets.
Maybe, thinking about it, I’m missing my Deepind12 by Behringer a little bit. I used it very little, maybe I underestimated the sound of this synthesizer, it had very interesting sounds for my productions!

6. What gear has inspired you to produce the most music?

In this period I used a lot the prophet rev2. In every one of my productions there is the sound of this synthesizer. I love the sound depth of it. I love it!
This synthesizer together with my pedals creates sound textures that no VST can create! I use VSTs a lot, but the analog heat is unmatched!

7. If you had to start over, what would you get first?

Maybe I would have liked to have started with Analog Rytm by Elektron.
A lot of my producer friends recommended this drum machine.

8. What’s the most annoying piece of gear you have, that you just can’t live without?

Surely the ZOIA by empress, I love to use this instrument, I often use this pedal/ Synth for my productions. Unfortunately it is very difficult to create presets for my projects!… But I love it.

9. Most surprising tip/trick/technique that you’ve discovered about a bit of kit?

I use the prophet rev2 with the particle by red panda and the FABRIKAT by Pladask elektrisk to create the audio textures for my projects. This is a great kit to create infinite audio landscapes! Every time I use these tools pre satisfied with the final result!

I started learning to play guitar in my city’s school when I was 13 years old. from there was born my passion for music. Fortunately now is my job!

What still drives you to make music?

I always have a strong need inside to continue to create and communicate through music, my best communication channel is music! I think it’s my addiction now!

How do you most often start a new track?

Usually to start a song I create improvisations with my synthesizer and sampling sounds with Ableton

To create a song I take a long time, when I believe that there are no other changes or additions to do I consider it over and ready for the mix and master!

“Set a goal and don’t give up until you reach it. The professionals do not give up in front of the first obstacle and already think 3 moves in advance. While your teammates are still discussing the reasons for the band’s dissolution, you must already be progressing on your next project: tempus fugit!”

Alexandr – With Meraki

1. Favourite knob/fader/switch on a piece of gear and why?

Microbrute’s filter. First of all, I believe that this Steiner-Parker filter is one of the best I’ve put my hands on. And since the Brute was my first analog synthesizer it holds a special place in my heart. From the first sweep, I fell in love.

2. Do you have an ‘almost’ perfect bit of kit? What would you change?

Hmm it’s really difficult to say that something’s perfect. I will be super super boring and give it to the Launchpad. I work in Ableton’s session view all the time and it makes things so much faster. The only thing I would like to see is a 16×16 version to be able to see my whole project at once.

3. What setup do you bring on holiday/tour/commute etc.?

I actually was at my summer house for 3 weeks last month and I decided to bring the things I use the least to get to know them. So it was the Volca FM which I haven’t really used since I got it. Although the tiny knobs are horrible, the sounds are excellent. And with that I also used my iPad a lot. The apps you can find on the iPad are simply mind-blowing and highly underrated.

The DRC synthesizer is my absolute favorite iPad app. Beautiful sounds and super easy to program.

4. What software do you wish was hardware and vice versa?

Easy one. All the Valhalla DSP stuff. Best effects out there. If they could make hardware versions of their plugins and stay reasonably priced they would just destroy the whole pedal/ effects market.

I don’t really think I would want something hardware to become software. The physical connection you can have with a piece of gear is unbeatable in my opinion. 

5. Is there anything you regret selling… or regret buying?

Korg Minilogue

I don’t sell a lot. Even if I don’t use something it’s hard for me to go on and sell it. So from the things I’ve sold through the years, I regret none. And something I regret buying.. If I leave aside all the cheap stuff I got, I would say the Minilogue. I have a love-hate relationship with this synth. It’s great for the price, no argue with that, but it just leaves you every time wanting a bit more. It sounds “ok” but rarely great. So for anyone who’s looking to buy a poly synth, I would recommend to save and get something much better.

6. What gear has inspired you to produce the most music?

Might sound weird but it’s a dirt-cheap Casio digital piano. Having a 61 keys keyboard with full polyphony unlocked so many possibilities. I only use 2 piano sounds that sound decent, but it’s almost on every track I’ve ever released.

7. If you had to start over, what would you get first?

Acid Pro 3.0

Ableton Live vs FL Studio. I’ve been making music for 15 years. Actually my first DAW was one called Acid Pro 3.0. Only the 80s kids might know this one.. But my first actual DAW was FL studio. Switching to Ableton was life changing for me. For me, its workflow suits me perfectly and it was a catalyst for me to finish songs instead of just struggling with loops.

8. What’s the most annoying piece of gear you have, that you just can’t live without?

The 4-track cassette recorder for sure. It’s a Yamaha MT100. It’s big, I’ve repaired three times so far but I love using it. Everything is going through tape so I simply cannot live without it.

9. Most surprising tip/trick/technique that you’ve discovered about a bit of kit?

I don’t deep dive to my gear. I want them to be simple and I prefer things that do only one thing really well. A nice technique I use for drums is the LFO assigned to sample slot on the Digitakt. I create a project with very few samples on it (10-16) and besides the kick I apply the LFO to the other tracks to come up with new patterns every time. That way you can make cool variations and you also audition sounds for your drum patterns.

How did you get into music?

I’m drawn to all kinds of art. I take photos, I make videos, I draw, I sculpt.. Music is just another way to express my creative side. And besides that, as a kid I’ve always dreamt to become a rock star but never got into a band. So I’ve decided to have this one man – band thing going on nowadays. 

What still drives you to make music?

I don’t really know. I just can’t wait to get to my studio and start playing around and create something. It is something that relaxes me and I deeply enjoy it. 

How do you most often start a new track?

It always starts with the piano. I write some chords, a melody and start building from there.

How do you know when a track is finished?

Oh that’s so hard.. Once I finish arranging (and this is the hardest part for me) I know I’m really close to call it finished. So when I start mastering and then run it through tape I simply commit and call it a day.

Best creative advice that you’ve ever heard?

My dad, who is also an artist, always told me that you have to put “meraki” to your art. Meraki is a Greek word that means: “To do something with soul, creativity, or love.”

Laura Katić – Caperooza

1. Favourite knob/fader/switch on a piece of gear and why?

My favorite knobs are the ones from my Modular Synth. Starting to build my own machines was a great achievement for me and I definitely have a special affection for the knobs of my Eurorack type modular system, which I built piece by piece from scratch in CIRCUITO SONORO LABORATORIO a workshop laboratory I started with a colleague where I investigate modular synthesis and perform sound experimentation.

2. Do you have an ‘almost’ perfect bit of kit? What would you change?

Drumbrute Impact allows me to flow creatively and take advantage of those moments of inspiration to the fullest, it is the most important thing for me. Having powerful rhythms and sounds to create the beat is time won in that process. There are no pauses to make settings or edits and that’s where I can find the perfect sound.

3. What setup do you bring on holiday/tour/commute etc.?

COMPUTER AND MINILAB MK2 Each new place I visit has its unique magic, traveling is opening my mind and I cannot miss the opportunity to be inspired by that journey, so I bring my computer with virtual synths, Arturia’s V collection is very complete.
To have control of the Daw and Synths, I also carry Arturia’s Minilabmk2, it’s small and everything fits in my backpack. As a plus I also use the cell phone to record ambient sounds and some concrete sounds I can use later as samples.

4. What software do you wish was hardware and vice versa?

I would like to have an app version for cell phones or tablets of the pocket operator, I use PO Speak and even though its a small machine I achieve sounds with a lot of character and create powerful beats.

5. Is there anything you regret selling… or regret buying?

TC HELICON VOICE PROCESOR – MINITAUR
The TC helicon Voice live touch, not so much to regret selling it, but I would buy it again. I sold it to buy the moog minitaur so it wasn’t that painful haha…

The Tc Helicon is a vocal processor that I really enjoyed using, I used to loop my voice layer by layer and create entire songs adding effects and transforming it into an instrument more like a synthesizer, I came to create my own processes for the voice, very fun.

6. What gear has inspired you to produce the most music?

Sequencers are a “must have” for me. This year I´ve been fortunate to be sponsored by ARTURIA and one of the machines that I use the most to produce now is the Key Step Pro, i was using the Beat Step Pro before, so it was very easy and intuitive for me the change. To Control analog and digital hardware in real time is pure creation i just connect all my synthesizers and I flow, the music takes over me.

7. If you had to start over, what would you get first?

I studied music as a profesional career so i was used to compose my music more in an academic way through sheet music then pass it to the computer in a Daw, recording each instrument track by track until a had a whole structured song and that was it. Now i would say that having Vsts, a good computer and a controller is the easiest way to start. Make your music “in the Box”

8. What’s the most annoying piece of gear you have, that you just can’t live without?

9. Most surprising tip/trick/technique that you’ve discovered about a bit of kit?

There are no rules, we are rhythm, we are a constant beat by the pulse of our heart, interpreting those vibrations within us and taking them out into the real world is what has led me to make “broken beats” more amalgamated rhythms and finally to feel them as an extension of what music makes in me.

I have many ways of making rhythmic patterns, I use samples, drum machines, I use sounds, I record noises and process them, but in the end the thing is to decide what textures you want to create with all those tools and I always try to create a different atmosphere that reaches the person who is there listening.
